Question: The electricity in my house keeps shutting off?

Its a 2 story 3 bedroom house built in about 1997

recently within the last 2 days the electricity in the down stairs area kitchen and living room area have been shutting off at about the same time between 7 and 8 thirty

the kitchen and the living room are connected

Anyways since this started happening ive had to go to the fuse box and Im not sure which switch it is because its dark but there's a switch that its like it between the on and off position and I have to turn it all the way to the off position then back to the on and everything works again like normal

what could be the problem

Additional Details
and when this happens the refrigerator still works

but all the lights lamps and the tv shuts off and doesn't work Best

Answer chosen by asker:

The breaker that you describe is tripped. It sensed an overload or a fault and cut power to the circuit to save your wiring and your house (and maybe your life). What you are doing is resetting it. Now comes the fun part...

Why did it trip? Either overloaded circuit (the space heater that was mentioned is a good candidate for this) or short-circuit in the wiring.

This house is not too old. While not impossible, it is unlikely that the breaker is bad. It is probably working fine and doing exactly what its manufacturer designed and built it to do.

Call a licensed electrician, if necessary, and find the cause very soon or the breaker may stop doing its job. This is a good way to meet your local professional firefighters and see them in action, up close and personal.

Crônica: Little John and the Pot

One day little John borrowed a pot from his neighbour Manoel. The next day he brought it back with another little pot inside. "That's not mine," said Manoel. "Yes, it is," said little John. "While your pot was staying with me, it had a baby."
Some time later little John asked Manoel to lend him a pot again. Manoel agreed, hoping that he would once again receive two pots in return. However, days passed and little John had still not returned the pot. Finally Manoel lost patience and went to demand his property. "I am sorry," said little John. "I can't give you back your pot, since it has died." "Died!" screamed Manoel, "how can a pot die?" "Well," said little John, "you believed me when I told you that your pot had had a baby."
